Axe the Council tax

Liberal Democrats in Littlehampton have joined the national campaign to abolish the unfair council tax. Mark Foster, Littlehampton campaigner said "The Tories invented it, the Labour government have kept it and it's gone up and up and up. As a tax on the occupation of a home, it hits those on low and fixed incomes the most". The banding system results in the wealthiest residents paying a much lower rate of overall taxation. The poorest 10% pay over four times more of their income in council tax than the richest 10%. Council tax is expensive to collect and requires an additional bureaucracy of benefits that attempt (and often fail) to return to the poorest people what is taken from them in local taxation. In 2003/4 the admin costs were £569 million in England alone. The Liberal Democrats would replace the council tax with a "local income tax" entirely based on the ability to pay, this would save at least £300 million in admin costs. This tax would be calculated and collected by the Revenue and the council wouldn't be told your income. Councils could concentrate on local services instead of collecting money! People who try and justify the council tax are defending the indefencable! Whatever your political allegiance, join the fight!
